I was wandering though the beautiful karst landscape along the Yulong River north of Yangshou when I happened upon a travel guide picking up his charges at the end of a raft trip. He encouraged me to talk with the young boatman about taking me upriver and back. Though neither of us spoke the other's language, he not English, me not Chinese, we negotiated an agreeable price for a raft trip up the Yulong River to Yulong Vilage and back to Jiuxian were I was staying. It was one of the best travel experience I've had. Wonderful things happen when you are open to a little synchronicity. After renting a bicycle in Yangshou I spent an entire day biking through the small villages south of town along the Li River. I found a ferry crossing and was encouraged to take it to the other side of the river where I biked some more.
